Emily Lais - Barcelona, Spain - Spring 2017

Program: International Studies plus Internship Course Option plus Integrated Studies 3rd Quarter Spring Semester

Blog Link: http://tapasandtiaras.wixsite.com/spain

Hi! My name is Emily Lais and I’m a junior at St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. I’ll be pursuing my double major of Spanish and International Business at Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain during the upcoming semester. As an only child from the suburbs of Minneapolis, I’m sure that everything from the weather to the culture will be a bit of a shock, but I’m so excited to experience all that the city has to offer. In my free time I like to think of myself as an artist and a nature enthusiast, and I especially enjoy exploring new places. I don’t currently have any plans for after graduation, but I know that I want a job that will allow me to travel and continue to use my Spanish throughout the rest of my life.

Melissa Bellerjeau - Seville, Spain - Spring 2017

Program: Spanish Studies/Integrated Studies Academic Year

Blog Link: http://www.onegirlabroad.com/

Hola! My name is Melissa Bellerjeau. I am a Sophomore Journalism major at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. What I am hoping to gain from my time in Spain is to advance to working proficiency in the Spanish language which will allow me to communicate with Spanish-speakers in the U.S. and around the world and share their stories accurately and fairly. But for the time being, I am so excited to share my stories with all of you on my life in Spain. I think my perspective will be unique as an academic year student since I will be studying abroad from September to June. I hope to spend this extended time assimilating to life in Spain as much as possible: living as locals do, establishing relationships with them, and adopting the local language and culture. When travelling, I think the most important things are visiting a city’s famous sites, learning about its lifestyle, tasting their food and finding fun ways to stay active, you know, balancing tapas with walks around the city.

Alicia Krewer - Córdoba, Argentina - Summer 2015

Blog Link:https://amiculturedyet.wordpress.com/

My name is Alicia Krewer and I am a second year student at the University of Vermont studying Biology and Spanish. I was first bitten by the travel bug during the second semester of my senior year of high school, when I went to Canada, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland all within 2 months of each other. My desire to travel was only heightened by the freedom that moving 3021 miles away from home can provide. But, my affliction truly became chronic during my winter vacation this past December when I took 5 (count ’em, 5) layover flights to ultimately reach Lima, Perú where I did service for a week. Now my free time is consumed by dreams of traveling again, by dreams of staying in uncomfortable hostels, and by dreams of befriending travelers from all over the world while I soak in different cultures and experiences, which is why I am ecstatic to announce that I have extensive travel plans for this summer. Not only will I be road tripping to Pennsylvania (from Vermont, by way of Amherst, Massachusetts) to see my two closest college friends, but I will be touring South America and vehemently gorging myself on the freshness of my surroundings.

I hope that through writing about and documenting my immersion within the Spanish culture, you too can come to love and appreciate it just as much as I do. ¡Vámonos!

Amie Gagnon - Alicante, Spain - Academic Year 2014

Hello all!  I’m Amie, and I’m studying abroad for an academic year in Alicante, Spain.  I’m a student at Keene State College, majoring in Spanish, minoring in German, and with a keen interest in travel and the opportunity it brings, and the people you meet!  Even so, I’m nervous but excited…this isn’t my first time abroad, but it will be my first time using a foreign language for any time longer than an hour or two!  I’m totally not ready for this adventure, but that’s the best way to begin: feet first, ready or not!  I can’t wait to share my experience and some pictures, and to make the world just a little bit smaller for everyone reading.

Lily Fehler - Alicante, Spain - Fall 2014

My name is Lily and I am returning to Spain for about four months of study after a too-short visit to Granada and Madrid in 2004.  Although I have changed my area of study several times, I am in my final year of studies in Spanish Language and Culture at Russell Sage, an all-female college in Troy, NY. In addition to my studies at the Universidad de Alicante, I hope to see as much of Spain and Portugal as I can on a shoestring.  Please come along for the journey as I document it on my blog!

Bienvenidos a mi mundo en Argentina! Soy Leanne y tengo 20 años.Ever since I was a child, I have loved to travel, but it is exhilarating that this I time I am on my own to grow in independence and diversity for the six months that I am abroad. I look forward to forging a new lifestyle, which will include Argentine asados, or barbecues, fútbol (maybe I will run into Lionel Messi on the streets!), the traditional drink of mate, and of course the tango. I want to go beyond what is recommended to see and do in the land of silver, and create my own unique adventures along undiscovered roads and neighborhoods.

Blog Link: Crossing Borders

Hi.  I'm Kerri. My name is Stephanie, I am 20 years old and I am spending two months studying abroad in Alicante, Spain. This will be my first time abroad and I am very nervous but ready to have an adventure. Amy Gu - Alicante, Spain - Summer 2014

¡Hola! Soy Amy. I’m traveling to Alicante for 8 weeks to participate in two summer terms of study abroad. From June to July, I plan to broaden my perspective on European culture and the Spanish language by immersing in a place foreign to me on many levels. I come from Southwestern University, a private liberal arts school in Georgetown (30 minutes north of Austin, Texas) in which 50% of students study abroad. In Alicante, I will meet a completely opposite environment from the suburbs and heavy Asian American presence in my home, Austin. Throughout my summer in Spain, however, I will learn in which ways such opposite cultures can meet ends and honor each other’s uniqueness. I will take home sharpened Spanish proficiency and a greater understanding of people different from me.

Taylor Roberts - Alicante, Spain - Summer 2014

In exactly one week, I will be boarding a plane to Alicante, Spain and I won't be returning for two months. I have every emotion flowing through me: excitement, nerves, happy, nostalgia, anxious. I've never been too far from home for a long period of time and let alone, the only traveling I did as a kid was for my brother's hockey tournaments, not exactly a vacation. The idea of going across the ocean without much contact to home scares me, but at the same time, I can't even wait. Right now, in this very moment, I'm ready to get on that plane and explore something bigger than myself. I'm ready to experience something this wonderful and I'm grateful for this opportunity. More importantly, I can't wait to share this experience with everyone. To quote anonymously, "I'd rather look back at my past and say, 'I can't believe I did that!', instead of saying, 'I wish I did that'" is exactly the feeling I'm having.

Kelly Coles - Barcelona, Spain - Summer 2014

During my stay I’ll be studying at Universitat Pompeu Fabra and living with a young couple in the center of the city. I’m pretty nervous about this "aventura", but I cannot wait to get started! Read along to learn all about my travels and to see how this Jersey girl takes on Barcelona.

Katy Kembitzky - Córdoba, Argentina - Summer 2014

On July 10 I will say good-bye to United States and Hola Argentina! This is an opportunity of a lifetime to study abroad during my undergraduate career. Ever since I was a child, I have loved to travel. I have yet to travel to South America - I am so thrilled for the new experience. I want to see the new terrain, make an adventure through an unknown city and be immersed into a culture different than my own.

Eric Millburn - Córdoba, Argentina - Spring 2014

I am going to Cordoba(supposed to have an accent over the first o) Argentina February 8th, 2014! I will be there until July 5th, 2014. This will be my first study abroad trip of many! I want to blog about every little adventure that happens there. I will be studying at the Universidad Nacional de Cordoba which is the second oldest university in Argentina. I am taking five classes including Culture of Argentina, Argentine Spanish, Argentine History, Argentine Cinematography, and Argentine Literature. There are multiple excursions that I hope to complete by the end. For example, I want to go fly fishing in the raging rapids of Argentina, bungee jumping, meet an Argentine author, and go to the World Cup in Rio, Brazil! By the time I return, I hope to be fluent in Spanish so I can then go on to learn my next language! Stay tuned for all the stories through out the next 6 months.
