"Spanish Only" Contest

Each semester, Spanish Studies programs hold a "Spanish Only" contest and present awards to the students that have made the most effort to speak in Spanish during their study abroad, as voted by their peers. The contest is a way to encourage students to follow the "Spanish Only Policy," which stipulates that students should speak in Spanish whenever they are in class, at a Spanish Studies Center or university, and on all Spanish Studies-sponsored activities and excursions. This helps students improve their Spanish practice and to be conscious of not speaking in English while around their North American peers. The winners of this semester's Spanish Only contests in Seville and Alicante, Spain and Córdoba, Argentina have been announced, and photos are viewable on our Facebook page.

Visiting Professor to Teach Special Course in Seville

This Spring 2012, Spanish Studies students will have the opportunity to explore Seville from a unique perspective. Dr. Rafael Chabrán, visiting professor from Whittier College, will lead students on a poetic journey through Spanish literature, sevillano culture and family legacy through the study of the Antonio Machado family of Seville. An expert in Spanish literature and well-known at Whittier as a fun and engaging professor, Dr. Chabrán will bring his love of Spain and passion for poetry to the Center in Seville to help students learn more about Andalusian culture. Click here to learn more about Dr. Chabrán's course, Thinking in Andalusian: The Antonio Machado Family of Seville.
