Academic Opportunities for High School Students
Spanish Studies Abroad offers high school students the
unique opportunity to engage in cultural immersion and Spanish language
while obtaining college-level credit. From summer programs to gap
semester/academic year experiences, Spanish Studies encourages students to join us
by way of a summer, semester, academic year, or a high school customized program.
Summer Terms in Spain
Spanish Studies Abroad offers
the opportunity for juniors and seniors in high school to take
university level classes for one or two 3 1/2-week summer terms. During
each term, students can choose from a variety of courses designed to
advance mature, correct expression of Spanish language and critical
thinking. Summer terms are available in all three of our program
locations:
A study abroad experience with Spanish Studies Abroad
involves cultural immersion at every turn, including homestays, support
from staff and resident directors, and various cultural activities. Spanish Studies boasts excellent professors and interesting classes designed for
non-native speakers. In-class instruction is enriched with excursions
and cultural visits to places of interest.
Gap Semester/Academic Year Abroad
If you are a graduating high school senior
who is looking for a meaningful, language-intensive international
experience before entering college, or have received mid-year admissions
to a college or university, you may want to consider enrolling in a Spanish Studies Abroad University-Level Semester Program during
the gap period. Students earn university-level credit, take courses
alongside other university students, and participate in all regular
program activities and excursions.
Gap semester and academic year programs are available in all three program locations:
-
Alicante, Spain- Spanish Studies Program: Spanish Studies Abroad works with Universidad de Alicante to offer language and culture
courses specifically designed for non-native speakers. Our students
have frequent contact with a Spanish Studies Abroad Resident Director, who guides the
students through the process of studying abroad and living with a host
family. Excursions include a weekend study trip to Granada or Barcelona
and guided visits to the historic city center, theater, Castillo de
Santa Bárbara, and more. Students may also participate in workshops for
credit ranging from Flamenco guitar and percussion to wind surfing and
sailing through Universidad de Alicante's Living the Culture program.
-
Seville, Spain- Spanish Studies Program:
Designed for the advanced student that has completed the equivalent
of intermediate Spanish. The core of the Spanish Studies
program is a choice of courses in Spanish language and culture taught at
the Center by native Spanish faculty. You immerse yourself in Spanish
language and culture while fulfilling the requirements needed for
Spanish, international studies, business and other majors. In addition
to living in a Spanish home, you are given the opportunity to
participate in a full array of study tours, cultural events, and social
activities.
